See what a stranger can see

The point of this exercise is not surveillance. It is to look at your child online through the eyes of someone with no good intentions, and then fix what that view exposes.

Start with the handles you know. Search them the way a stranger would, and note what comes back without logging in anywhere.

The specific risk signals

Publicly visible school or club names, a consistent location pattern in posts, a bio that lists an age and a town, and photos that show a house number or a street sign — these are the details that let a stranger place a child.

Also look for contact surfaces: an open direct-message setting, a public email, a linked account that accepts messages from anyone. Reachability is the risk, not visibility on its own.

Handle-first, not platform-first

Checking app by app misses the accounts that matter. Start from the handle and see where else it resolves — the forgotten forum and the old game account are usually the ones nobody in the family remembers.

Pay attention to the earliest accounts. Handles chosen young tend to contain real names, birth years or school initials that stayed long after the person stopped thinking about them.

Settings that actually change the outcome

Turn off find-by-phone and find-by-email on every social platform. Make the main account private. Review followers and remove people nobody in the household recognises.

Then have the conversation about why, rather than issuing restrictions. The technical settings protect against strangers; the conversation protects against the accounts a child opens somewhere else.
